What do the Laestrygonians do to Odysseus and his men?

"Howdy again, ladies and gentlemen.  It is nice to see you this morning.  I promise that you had a good night's sleep subsequently our journeying to Icaria.  It is now the 2nd day of our trip, and we are getting deeper into the Greek isles.  Does anyone know what mythical monsters Odysseus and his men see next?  No? I will requite you a hint; they are similar to the cyclops of the concluding story."

"Are you referring to Odysseus's encounter with the Laestrygonians?"

"Wow, you guys are a very smart group!"  I was in fact referring to the story of Odysseus and the Laestrygonians.  The Laestrygonians were a race of giants that lived on the island of Andros.  We volition be sailing in to the harbor of Telepylus where the sheer cliffs volition provide excellent photo opportunities.  The island is rumored to be deserted, but I suggest you lot continue your eyes on the cliffs.  Nosotros do not want to suffer the aforementioned fate equally many of Odysseus'southward men.

"Equally this story begins, Odysseus and his men have been sailing for nearly a week.  They are relieved when they grab sight of the distant shore of Andros.  After another 20 minutes or then of paddling they finally reach the shore.  Odysseus is a piffling timid at first because their twelve ships are docked in a very narrow and steep harbor.  For this reason he, and he solitary, decides to get out his ship outside of the harbor - a conclusion that will relieve him from certain death after in the story.  After they all get off their ships, Odysseus sends 3 men to the nearby city of Lamus to encounter what kind of creatures lived on the isle.  After they take been walking for a while, the 3 men come upon a daughter cartoon water from a stream.  They ask her who the people were who live in this land and who the ruler is.  She points to a nearby palace and tells them her father is the ruler.  The three men immediately head for the palace to greet the local ruler.  When they enter the palace, they are surprised at how large everything is.  They are even more surprised when the Queen comes out to meet them.  She is every bit large as a mountain and does non seem to be in skillful spirits.  The men notice that she is non in a proficient mood, and await around to check their surroundings.  They notice that there are human bones scattered across the floor.  The three men brainstorm to back away, but before they tin move towards the door the behemothic woman calls upon her husband Antiphates who is even larger than she is.  Without saying a word Antiphates grabs 1 of the men and eats him.  Every bit the other two men run for the ships, Anitphates calls the other Laestrygonians.  The two remaining men run back to the ships equally fast equally their feet can accept them, with the Laestrygonians hot on their heels.  All the men board the ships and begin heading out to sea.  They practise not go far far though; the Laestrygonians beginning throwing giant boulders at the ships and sinking them.  The harbor proves to be a death trap, and the just one wise enough to avoid the trap is Odysseus.  He and the few men he has remaining sail abroad unharmed.  The other eleven ships were destroyed; merely Odysseus's ship escapes."

"Once over again Odysseus uses his superior wit to escape with his life.  I hope you all enjoyed the trip to Telepylus harbor and the isle of Andros.  We got some first-class views of the cliffs, and were lucky plenty to escape with our lives."

Author'due south Notes:  I really enjoyed telling this story.  First of all, it is a story that I had never read before I decided to practise my story volume on Monsters of the Odyssey.  Secondly, it was a story that left a lot up to estimation.  I chose not to change the story up a lot, because I am trying to preserve the originality of Homer's version.  Nonetheless, if I had wanted to change the story drastically, it would have been a definite possibility.  I did slightly modify the way the story was told though.  Information technology takes a trained eye to find the subtle difference I put into identify, but I inverse the perspective from which the story was told.  Instead of telling it from Odysseus's perspective, like information technology is told in the Odyssey, I told it from my own perspective.  Telling from a story teller'due south perspective made information technology easier to write.  For instance, I did non take to add dialogue to this story, and I did not desire to.  I really liked retelling this story and I hope that you lot enjoyed reading it.  I encourage you to try to make connection to my other stories.  For example, what similarities practice you lot see between the cyclops and the Laestrygonians?
